Redmond, WA. March 25, 1996 - After nearly a year of negotiations in a competitive product review, the European Robotic Arm (ERA) Program awarded a $1.4 million contract for DC/DC converters to Interpoint Corporation. All power conversion products produced by Interpoint will be fully qualified to Class K, the MIL-PRF-38534 standard for space-qualified components.
"We are very excited to see such an overwhelming response to our new offering of Class K qualified products," said Craig Doering, Director of Interpoint's Space Power Products Division. "By the end of the year, we will be the only qualified manufacturer of a standard line of Class K DC/DC power conversion products in the world. We are pleased that we could offer the ERA a choice of standard space-qualified products instead of the traditional custom-built converters. Our standard Class K converters meet the highest quality standard, and because they're standard products, are lower in cost than custom-built converters." Interpoint will provide Class K qualified converters from its standard line of products for this program. Converters for the ERA include the new radiation-hardened MHP-120 Series, currently in the final stages of development, plus converters from the existing MSA and MHF+ Series. The products are scheduled to begin shipping in late 1996. The ERA Program is truly an international effort. The purchasing agent for the project is Bosch Telecom in Backnang, Germany, the main contractor is Fokker Space in the Netherlands, and the financing will be provided by the European Space Agency (ESA). The ERA will be produced by a consortium from Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland. Once completed, the Robotic Arm, part of the Russian segment, will build structural portions of the International Space Station while in orbit. The International Space Station a co-operative program between Russia, Europe, and the United States. The win of the ERA business immediately follows Interpoint's announcement that it is qualifying its Redmond, Washington facility to the military's standard of Class K to allow for the production of DC/DC converters fully qualified for space applications. Interpoint has formally notified DSCC of its plans to obtain certification as a full Class K production facility this year. The company plans to ship its first Class K products by the fourth quarter of 1996. Class K and Class H manufacturing, environmental screening, and documentation are defined by MIL-PRF-38534. Class K (formerly known as Class S) is the final quality level above Class H (formerly Class B) in product reliability qualifications. Products designed to Class K standards are specifically for programs where a component must perform without failure for ten years or the life of the mission in harsh radiation environments.
