What's New At Interpoint - More Power, More Flexibility Offered in Interpoint's New DC/DC Converters

October 23, 1996, REDMOND, WA - Today Interpoint Corporation introduced the MOR Series, a new 120-watt family of DC/DC converters. MOR Series converters offer more output power and more flexibility than any other converter housed in the industry standard package size of 1.5" x 3" x 0.4".

The MOR Series offers between 100 and 120 watts of output power, depending on the model, for use in military, aerospace, space and other applications where size, weight and reliability are critical. The single and dual models feature many output configurations including 3.3, 5, 9.5, 12, 15, ±5, ±9.5, ±12, ±15. For additional flexibility, the MOR Series features one of the industry's widest trim ranges, 60% to 105% of output power, to allow users to adjust the converter to virtually any output required. The 3.3V output model, for example, may be trimmed as low as 2V for a variety of low volatge applications. Dual model outputs may be combined for a total output of up to 30 volts. A high power density of up to 84 watts per cubic inch for both single and dual models delivers maximum output power with minimal board real estate required.

In addition to versatile output voltage, the MOR also offers five different package options for flexible system implementation. Package styles include a tab case style and the standard end-flange case style. Case styles offer a variety of straight-leaded, upleaded, or downleaded options.

Efficiencies for the series range as high as 87%, input ripple current is less than 60 milliamps (mA) peak-to-peak (p-p), and output ripple voltage is as low as 30 millivolts (mV) p-p. Multiple protection features, including transient protection, indefinite short circuit protection, low voltage lockout and soft start, are standard on all MOR models. All models also feature external and internal synchronization and an inhibit function.

MOR Series converters are available off-the-shelf with basic screening or with environmental screening. MIL-STD-883 models and models screened to Class K for space applications will be released in 1997.

Interpoint implemented several new design techniques to achieve the high output power of the MOR Series. In the past, Interpoint previously offered up to 65 watts in this same package. To boost the power output, Interpoint used its proprietary Asymmetrical Power Transfer (APT) technology to optimize power transformer core reset, recycle magnetizing energy, and reduce peak voltage stresses on power switches and rectifiers. To manage the thermal considerations, an improved thermal design was implemented to increase thermal efficiency, improve thermal pass and reduce semiconductor junction temperature and magnetics hot spot temperature. Efficiencies were enhanced through a magnetic design which minimizes both conduction and core loss. Both noise and efficiencies were improved through a careful circuit layout which minimizes both conduction loss and EMI.

Founded over 25 years ago, Interpoint today is the industry's most experienced supplier of high density, high reliability power conversion products where size, weight and reliability are critical. Interpoint offers more than 500 standard power products, including a complete line of products that are fully compliant to MIL-STD-883 and are available on Standard Microcircuit Drawings.

Pricing for units in the MOR Series will begin at $840 each, with discounts available for volume purchases. For technical data on these new converters or a full catalog, contact Interpoint's Sales Team.
