Interpoint Awarded DC/DC Converter Patent
Redmond, WA -- Interpoint Corporation was recently awarded a patent from the U.S. Government for its breakthrough technology entitled "Secondary Flyback Core Reset" (SFCR) for multiple output DC/DC power converters. Power converters with a single-ended forward topology and which incorporate the new SFCR scheme will have a smaller size, improved conversion efficiency, and lower EMI than converters which utilize a standard reset scheme. The invention is credited to Jay Kuehny, Director of Research and New Product Development, and Ming Chen, Engineering Director, of Interpoint Corporation.

According to Kuehny and Chen, traditional reset schemes have several disadvantages. Converters incorporating these schemes require a larger magnetic core resulting in a larger overall converter size, generate a higher RMS current which causes greater power consumption for less efficiency, have a higher reflected ripple current resulting in higher electromagnetic interference (EMI), and cause greater stress on the main power switch, resulting in higher switching losses and a lower overall efficiency.

Interpoint's SFCR overcomes these challenges for multiple output converters through the use of an extended duty cycle. Extending the duty cycle reduces the RMS current in primary and secondary conductors, which improves efficiency and reduces thermal stress. Additionally, the extended duty cycle can also reduce voltage stress on switching elements and rectifiers, allowing the use of lower voltage components in the converter which boost efficiency. The increased efficiency of the converter allows a reduction in the size of the transformer, resulting in an overall reduced size. Finally, the extension of the duty cycle lowers switching peak to average currents, which in turn lowers the input reflected ripple current and results in reduced EMI.

Interpoint currently uses this technology in its new MHP270 and MK200 products. The MHP270 offers up to 65 watts of output power over the full military temperature range and is available in single or dual output configurations. A total of five MHP270 units can be paralleled for a total output of nearly 300 watts. The MK200 offers up to 200 watts of output power in a case size one-half that of the industry standard. The MK200 also operates over the full military temperature range of -55°C to +125°C and is available in single or dual configurations. Interpoint plans to incorporate SFCR into single-ended forward converters developed in the future.

Founded over 25 years ago, Interpoint today is the industry's most experienced supplier of high density, high reliability power conversion products where size, weight and reliability are critical. Interpoint offers more than 500 standard power products, including a complete line of products that are fully compliant to MIL-STD-883 and are available on Standard Microcircuit Drawings.
